Portfolio trading is expanding in surprising ways

Portfolio trading was conceived as a way of managing larger trades for institutional investors in the exchange-traded fund (ETF) space, however, it is increasingly being used for smaller sized trades across new instruments in the fixed income landscape and by an ever increasing set of different trading counterparties.

This variety is creating new opportunities for traders to access liquidity, says Ted Husveth, managing director of US credit at Tradeweb, who reveals that portfolio trading is taking off in new markets, for different types of firm and with a greater range of trade types than was ever expected.
